This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum music

This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.

At Kingsclere CE Primary School we teach our curriculum music in class using ‘Charanga’ an online resource. We use their English Model Music Curriculum Scheme to ensure we are in line with the Government’s non statutory guidance for key stage 1 and 2. In the Early Years we follow the original Charanga scheme and supplement it with the wide range of alternative resources available on Charanga. Each class is taught music for an hour a week, although this is not necessarily in one block. The hour includes a weekly focused singing session in key stages, run by our music lead.

Throughout our curriculum lessons children have the opportunity to listen and respond to music, sing, compose and perform. We use a selection of tuned and untuned percussion instruments as well as digital resources to support composition and performances.  Details of curriculum coverage can be found on our website in Enquiry Curriculum | (kingsclereprimary.com)

We have a dedicated track of music to listen to during our daily collective worship. This track list offers a range of genres and instruments and is curated by our Music Lead each term with a changing focus.

Part B: Extra-curricular music

Children have opportunities to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands.  Our pupils at Kingsclere CE Primary School can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.

At Kingsclere CE Primary School we currently offer individual or small group lessons in guitar and drums run by ‘Good Vibes.’ Specialist tutors visit the school weekly and teach in one of our music rehearsal spaces.

We also offer individual flute tuition provided by a local independent school flute teacher. The teacher visits the school weekly, and lessons take place in a music rehearsal space. We have a dedicated EY/KS1 choir and a KS2 choir, both of which meet weekly.  There are other opportunities to join choirs for specific events throughout the year, such as Young Voices at the O2, The Mayors Variety Concert and a joint concert with our local village adult choir The Kingsclere Singers.   Our choirs are free of charge and are open to all the children in each key stage.

This year we are introducing a samba band, which will be free of charge and open to all children in KS2. This will be run a staff musician.

Individual and small group lessons are funded by parents/carers, however for those children who are Pupil Premium, these lessons may be subsidised by the Pupil Premium funding. If you are interested in instrumental tuition, please speak to our Music Lead.

Part C: Musical experiences

This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.

The children throughout the school will have the opportunity to perform or experience high quality music this academic year. Please see the list of opportunities below:

KS2 take part in the Mayor’s Variety Concert, performing and experiencing the other acts
Whole School singing together at our Act of Remembrance
Early Years and KS1 children will perform in a Nativity performance
Both choirs performing at the Kingsclere CE Christmas Fair
Whole School will perform together at St Mary’s Church for our Harvest Festival, Christmas Service and Easter Service
The Young Voices Choir will perform and experience the live music at the O2
Children will experience a live performance from the ‘Good Vibes Tutor Band’
Some year groups will experience a bespoke live performance created by KingsPA to support their curriculum enquiry learning
All children will have the opportunity to perform in or experience our Musical Soiree, for choir, ensembles and individual performances
Both choirs will have the opportunity to perform with the local adult choir, The Kingsclere Singers, in a joint concert
The children in Year 5/6 will perform in a musical production. The children from YR – Y4 will enjoy watching this performance

In the future

This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.

In future years, our Music Development Plan aims to achieve the following:

Introduction of a ukulele club
Introduction of a wider range of instrumental lessons on offer, including piano
Development of dedicated rehearsal spaces
Further develop engagement in extra-curricular opportunities for Pupil Premium and SEND children
Further develop our live music experiences
Continue to develop and enhance curriculum teaching and learning
